Historic Towns and Locations, Museums and Collectables

Historic Towns and Locations, Museums and Collectables

The hills forest, streams and fertile coastal plain attracted European settlers to the land that had sustained a diverse Indigenous Australian culture for many thousands of years.

The towns of Byford, Mundijong, Jarrahdale and Serpentine reflect in various ways the rich history of the area. From the 1830's onwards European settlers established small farms for cattle, sheep, horses and crops.

In the 1870's a thriving timber industry was driving the economy of the state. Jarrahdale was the first "Timber Town" of many throughout the South West of the state. Dairy and Poultry farms provide food for the growing population of Perth to the present day. The materials and style of the old buildings are a testament to the hard work and ingenuity of the pioneer workers.

There are small museums in the shire that tell the story of the lives and work of European settlers over the last 175 years. Keep an eye out for curious and collectable stores full of treasures from the past handcrafted with dedication and flare.

The Museum was a dream of our founder, Mr Hugh Manning, for many years and on September 18th 1993, THE DREAM became a reality.

With the sponsorship of Alcoa of Australia, Mr Manning and the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, a piece of land in Wellard Street Serpentine was made available. Then, with an army of volunteers who provided much of the labour, such  as site works, sand carting, painting, landscaping, steam cleaning, servicing and moving of tractors etc, THE DREAM HAD COME TRUE.

In 1994, The Museum won the Australia Day award for Community Event of the Year.

Bridge Farm, Turner Cottage, was built by the Turner family in 1856. Edward and Elizabeth Turner were two of the areas earliest settlers. In 1979, the original cottage was carefully and lovingly restored by their great-grandson Frank McKay and his wife Isobel. Family, friends and local people worked tirelessly in an effort that would create an opportunity for people from all over to see and experience the life and home of our early settlers. The cottage is still proudly owned and operated by descendants of the Turner family.

Fully guided tours with our wonderful and knowledgable guide Deb, are available upon request and can be arranged through the restaurant or by using the contact details provided.

Better yet- book during restaurant trading hours and enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner or refreshments in the stables restaurant before or after your tour, which is conveniently located just metres from the cottage.
